What: Mass information picket action
Where: The Beer Store, 900 Bank St. (near Holmwood in the Glebe)
When: 1:00pm - 2:00pm
Tomorrow, March 28, will mark the next province-wide Day of Action called by the United Steelworkers union in solidarity with a courageous group of 120 striking workers, forced out for over 18 months by Toronto metal can manufacturer Crown Holdings. These workers, members of USW local 9176, are fighting against outrageous company proposals for 2-tier wages and 2-tier pensions - in other words, proposals that the union sell out new hires and young workers. This union said no!
The Workers Action Group of Solidarity Against Austerity invites all supporters to join us for a mass Info-Picket action at 1pm - 2pm at the Beer Store at 900 Bank St.(the Glebe), where picketers will leaflet customers and passers-by to ask them to respect these striking workers by buying their beer in bottles rather than cans. The striking Crown workers point out that cans of beer that are marked with a small crown logo by the barcode were produced by scab strike-breakers, and are being sold by a rotten, union-busting company.
For more information on this struggle, and how to support it, check out the USW Crown campaign website http://takebacksnomore.ca and the twitter feed at #BottlesNotCans. The Ottawa and District Labour Council is also supporting this Day of Action, and invites supporters to join them at the Beer Store outlet at 209 Rideau St. (at Waller) from 12pm - 1pm.
Bring your union flag, banner, home-made signs, placards, pickets against 2-tier!
